Remember When: Policeman Lost Gun at North Decatur Punk Show

The Los Angeles punk band X played a show at Rumors, a now-defunct rock club that used to exist at the intersection of Clairmont and North Decatur roads, and a police officer lost his gun.

Forgive me, but I was born in '83 and raised in Maryland. So, prior to Tuesday, I'd never heard of Rumors, an apparent concert venue that used to exist at the intersection of Clairmont and North Decatur roads.

But, according to Creative Loafing, this was the case.

I was randomly combing through Atlanta's history Tuesday evening and stumbled across the alternative weekly's 30-year rearview of history in Atlanta it published when Creative Loafing itself turned 30 in 2002.

An incident at Rumors made the cut.

From the posting, which included defunct performance venues:

Rumors -- An indoor amphitheater complete with cement grandstands around its walls, Rumors was a wild and woolly rock club located at the intersection of Clairmont and North Decatur roads. X frontman John Doe still shudders at the memory of the night his band's show was delayed while an undercover cop searched the dance floor for his missing gun.

So, why did I post a decade-old article? Because, as I said, I've never heard of Rumors, and the thought of a rock club at the intersection of Clairmont and North Decatur (as it exists today) totally boggles the mind. The band X was big throughout the '80s and early '90s, so I'm going to guess Rumors shut down sometime in the '80s. Correct me if I'm wrong.

So, if anyone out there remembers this place, feel free to tell me about it in the comments section below. (I'm praying someone was at that show.)
