St. Pius X Sports Prepare for State Playoffs

The regular season for most springs sports at St. Pius X is coming to an end, while boys’ and girls’ tennis begin the state playoffs this week. The girls’ soccer team vaulted back to the top spot in the AAA state polls by scoreatl.com, while the boys’ team remains No. 1. Baseball sits in the No. 7 spot in AAA while girls’ lacrosse dropped to No. 8 in the A-AAAAA rankings.

Baseball recorded three shutouts, including two no-hitters last week to run its record to 17-4 on the year. After defeating Cross Keys, the Golden Lions no-hit Decatur, 14-0. Senior Mike Krill and sophomore Nick Spear combined to shut down the Bulldogs. Ryan Brennan, Andrew Harth and Will Robertson combined to no-hit Towers, 13-0. The Golden Lions are back in action on Monday at Blessed Trinity, before hosting Woodward and McNair on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

Boys’ soccer moved its record to 13-0-2 as the Golden Lions won its both matches last week. Tyler Alexander scored twice in a 7-0 rout of Milton on Tuesday evening. The top-ranked club in AAA then knocked off Woodward, 6-1 with Alexander again finding the back of the net twice. With the win, the Golden Lions clinched the Region 6-AAA title. St. Pius X hosts Decatur to end the regular season on Tuesday night.

Girls' soccer also captured the Region 6-AAA crown last week. After winning a non-region game against Milton, 5-1, the Golden Lions (13-1-3) shutout Woodward, 1-0. Tiffany Rodriguez tallied the only goal in the game. The ladies end the regular season by hosting Decatur on Tuesday evening.

Boys' tennis captured the Region 6-AAA title last week while the girls’ squad finished as region runners-up. Both teams will open the state playoffs hosting first round matches versus Banks County on Tuesday at the DeKalb Tennis Center.

Boys’ lacrosse won both of its games last week to improve to 5-8 on the season. St. Pius X defeated North Atlanta, 10-4 and shutout Greenbrier, 7-0. The Golden Lions hosted Marist Monday night and travel to Dunwoody on Tuesday before entertaining Greenbrier Friday night at Maloof Stadium.

Girls' lacrosse took three games last week. The Golden Lions (11-3) knocked off SW Dekalb and Grayson before using 20 saves from Sally Varner to defeat Sprayberry, 9-7. Claire Homrich scored three goals, while Caroline Quinn and Katherine Vocelka added two apiece in the win over Sprayberry. The ladies host MLK tonight before travelling to Marist for the region title on Thursday to end the regular season.

Both golf teams participate in the region tournament on Tuesday. The boys will play at Brookwood West Golf Course, while the girls’ will play on Wolf Creek.

The boys’ track and field team finished as region runners-up and the girls’ team took fourth place at the region meet. The Golden Lions will send 10 girls and nine boys to the State Sectionals on Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.
