The spring sports season will finally get into full gear this week with all teams having games or matches. Both basketball teams have advanced to the quarterfinal rounds of the state playoffs and will make road trips to their respective opponents’ home courts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The girls’ basketball team, ranked No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll, advanced to the AAA state quarterfinals after victories over White County and Oconee County. Asia Durr scored 28 points while Jasmine Carter added 14 in the 55-30 win over White County. The Golden Lions (27-3) used 25 points from Durr and 17 from Carter to defeat Oconee County 55-35 in the second round. St. Pius X travels to No. 1 Buford at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night.
The boys’ basketball team also advanced to the AAA state quarterfinals. The tenth-ranked Golden Lions (22-8) held off East Hall 47-45 in the first round and upset No. 4 Cartersville 51-44 in the second round. St. Pius X held the Purple Hurricanes to their lowest point total of the season and 28 points below their game average. The boys will travel to No. 7 North Hall on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Boys' soccer continued its dominance shutting out region foe Cedar Grove behind three goals from J.D. Manzo and two tallies apiece from Tyler Alexander and Edmundo Robinson. On Friday night, Calvin Jackson found the back of the net twice in a 5-0 win over Starr’s Mill. St. Pius X (4-0) hosts Collins Hill Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Berkmar at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Girls' soccer split its matches last week. The Golden Lions defeated Cedar Grove 12-0 and dropped a contest to Starr’s Mill 2-0. The ladies take on Collins Hill at 7:30 p.m. at Maloof Stadium on Tuesday and travel to Columbus at 6 p.m. on Friday.
The boys’ tennis team dropped a 4-1 match to perennial AAAAAA power Brookwood and defeated neighborhood rival Lakeside by a score of 5-0. Seniors Jack Cote, Austin Boaz and Ryan Francis led the Golden Lions in both matches. The boys host Parkview at the Dekalb Tennis Center on Monday at 4 p.m. before travelling to Dunwoody on Tuesday and Westminster on Thursday.
Girls’ tennis defeated Brookwood 3-2 last week and blanked Lakeside 5-0. The lady netters are back in action at Parkview on Monday and hosting Dunwoody at Dekalb Tennis Center on Tuesday at 4pm. The Golden Lions will travel to Westminster on Thursday.
The girls’ lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Holy Innocents’ last week 14-13. The ladies host Parkview at 5:30 p.m. on Monday and Wesleyan on Friday at 7 p.m.
Boys’ lacrosse opened, splitting its first two games. The Golden Lions fell to Lovett 11-6 before defeating Pace Academy 8-3. St. Pius X hosts MLK on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and North Gwinnett Thursday at 7 p.m.
Baseball took the opener on the road 8-4 over North Forsyth on Wednesday. Lovett defeated the Golden Lions 6-5 on Saturday. St. Pius X will take to the diamond at North Gwinnett on Wednesday at 5:55 p.m. in its only action this week.
