The winter sports St. Pius X have concluded or entered the state playoffs while spring sports opened regular seasons last week. The girls' basketball team continues to be ranked No. 3 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll while the boys' team moved into the top 10 at No. 10. Wrestling had two grapplers place in the state traditional meet. Soccer and tennis opened its regular seasons last week as baseball and lacrosse lift the lids on their regular seasons this week.
Girls' basketball took its second region title in three years, knocking off Decatur 51-35 in the Region 6-AAA championship game. Jasmine Carter led the Golden Lions (25-3) with 24 points while Asia Durr added 13, including a 70-foot shot at the end of the first half. Laura Redmond added eight in the win. To reach the finals, St. Pius X defeated Cross Keys and Blessed Trinity. Durr was named Player of the Year in the region while Carter was selected to the first team. The Golden Lions were set to host White County, the fourth-seed from Region 7, Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the first round of the AAA State Playoffs.
Boys’ basketball finished as the runners-up in the region tournament after a three-day run that included beating No. 2 seed Cedar Grove 49-47 in overtime on a tip-in by Nick Harris with one second left. The Golden Lions (20-8) lost to Woodward in a see-saw championship game, 46-41. Harris led St. Pius X with 14 points. The Golden Lions were set to host East Hall, the No. 3 seed from Region 7, on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. after the girls' game.
Wrestling had two wrestlers qualify for the state traditional meet in Macon over the weekend. Quinn Peragine placed third in the 120-pound weight class while Dalton Scoggins collected a fifth place finish in the 138-pound division.
Boys' soccer opened its season with two shutouts. Alex Kowalski and J.D. Mazon scored three goals apiece as the Golden Lions (2-0) blanked McNair 14-0. Manzo and Edmundo Robinson found the back of the net in a 2-0 win over Druid Hills on Friday. The Golden Lions were set to host Cedar Grove on Tuesday and Starr's Mill on Friday with both games starting at 7:30 p.m.
Girls' soccer posted two impressive wins to lift the lid on its season. The ladies knocked off McNair 12-0 and defeated Whitewater 9-0 on Friday. St. Pius X was set to host Cedar Grove and Starr's Mill on Tuesday and Friday, respectively, with 5:30 p.m. kick offs.
Boys' and girls' tennis were able to get one of their three scheduled matches in last week with the rainy weather. The boys team dropped a 3-2 decision to Mill Creek while the girls lost 4-1 to the Hawks.
The lacrosse season was set to open Tuesday with the boys' team travelling to Lovett at 7 p.m. while the girls host Holy Innocents' on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The first pitch of the baseball season is scheduled for 5:55 p.m. at North Forsyth.
