The last week of the regular season in basketball has arrived at St. Pius X, while swimming and diving caps its season this weekend in the state meet at Georgia Tech. The girls’ basketball team continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in the AJC AAA poll, while Swimming and Diving held on to No. 3 in the scoreatl.com A-AAAAA boys’ state poll and No. 4 in the girls’ rankings. Wrestling had four wrestlers advance to the sectionals this weekend. In addition, a member of the cross country and swim teams has been selected to represent the United States at the PATCO Junior World Championships in Brazil this summer.
Boys’ basketball split Region 6-AAA games this week defeating Decatur, 40-28, while dropping a 40-38 decision to Woodward. The Golden Lions (16-7, 9-3) broke a 15-all halftime tie to drop the Bulldogs for the second time this season. St. Pius X traveled to take on the War Eagles Friday night and lost a tough fought game against the region leader. The Golden Lions can finish no lower than the No. 3 seed in next week’s region tournament, which schedule will be released on Saturday after the regular season concludes Friday night. The cagers will travel to take on McNair on Tuesday before finishing the regular season at home for senior night versus Blessed Trinity at 7:30pm. The Golden Lions have defeated both teams in their previous meetings including a double overtime thriller over the Titans.
Girls' basketball won both region match-ups last week to move to 20-3 and 12-0 in region play. The Golden Lions defeated No. 9 Decatur, 55-41, behind 19 points from Asia Durr while Jasmine Carter and Laura Redmond chipped in 15 and 11, respectively. Friday night, St. Pius X knocked off Woodward, 63-50, as Durr dropped in 29 and Carter added 19, as the Golden Lions clinched the top seed in the region tournament while winning its 42nd consecutive regular season region game. The team travels to McNair Tuesday before concluding the regular season Friday night at home with Blessed Trinity. St. Pius X will open the Region 6-AAA tournament on Tuesday, February 12 at 7pm at Decatur High School.
Wrestling competed in the Area Traditional Tournament at Woodward over the weekend. Four wrestlers qualified for the state sectionals this weekend. Quinn Peragine placed 2nd; Harris Woodward, 3rd; Dalton Scoggins and John Garner, 4th in their respective weight classes and will travel to Ringgold on Friday for the sectionals.
Swimming and Diving will conclude its season at Georgia Tech in the State Championships Friday and Saturday.
Senior Devon Dabney was selected by the USA Triathlon Governing body to be one of four women to compete in the PATCO Jr. World Championships in Brazil in June. Dabney earned this honor by being ranked 4th in the USA in Jr. Elite Triathlon.
