About 10,000 residents in metro Atlanta, including North Druid Hills, lost power early Thursday morning after heavy wind and rain storms tore through the area Wednesday afternoon and evening, Georgia Power said.
The company was dealing with about 270 events statewide that have caused outages ranging from downed trees across power lines to wind damage, said Mark Williams, a Georgia Power spokesman, at about 2:30 a.m.
Power in North Druid Hills, particularly near Medlock Park, shut off at about 1:45 a.m. and returned an hour later, and Georgia Power was working as quickly as possible to restore power to the rest of affected areas, Williams said. Reports also indicated power shut off in the North Druid Hills area shortly before 5 p.m.
While Wednesday's storms only lightly disturbed the immediate metro Atlanta area, north Georgia suffered the chief impact. A tornado touched down in Bartow, Gordon and other northwest Georgia counties and caused extensive damage, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. An Adairsville man was reported dead after a tree crushed his home.
