St. Pius X Girls Basketball Remains at No. 3 Poll Spot

As the calendar moves closer to February, the winter sports teams at St. Pius X are reaching the conclusions of the regular season while spring sports begin practice. The girls’ basketball team continues to sit in the No. 3 spot in the AJC AAA poll while Swimming and Diving climbed to No. 3 in the scoreatl.com A-AAAAA boys’ state poll and No. 4 in the girls’ rankings.

Boys' basketball upped its record to 15-6 overall and 8-2 in Region 6-AAA play. St. Pius X knocked off Towers, 45-38 Tuesday. The Golden Lions followed with a 61-13 win over Cross Keys before stepping out of region play on Saturday. Excel Christian (20-1) defeated St. Pius X 64-62 at the buzzer in overtime. The cagers host Decatur Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. before travelling to Woodward on Friday with tip at the same time.

Girls' basketball took three wins last week with two over region opponents. The Golden Lions (18-3, 10-0) opened with a 75-15 win over Towers Tuesday night as Asia Durr and Jasmine Carter poured in 20 points apiece and Mackenzie Garrison added 11. St. Pius X then defeated Cross Keys behind 12 points from Carter and eight points each from Garrison, Laura Redmond and Sabrina Thomas. Saturday night, St. Pius X used 26 points from Durr to defeat Excel Christian, 56-17. Redmond chipped in nine points in the win. The Golden Lions host Decatur on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and will face Woodward on the road at 6pm Friday evening.

Swimming and Diving defeated Chamblee and participated in the Karen Blackman Invitational and Metro Atlanta Championships over the weekend. The Golden Lions will next compete in state championships on February 8-9.

Wrestling took dual matches from Chamblee, Dunwoody and Stone Mountain earlier in the week before placing seventh overall at the Dekalb County Championships. Individual placers from the Dekalb County event included Quinn Peragine (second), Dalton Scoggins (third), Nick Twiner (fourth), Connor Laubenthal, Josh Ressler and Philip Camp (all sixth place) in their respective weight classes. The Golden Lions will head to Woodward this weekend for the Area traditional tournament after hosting North Atlanta on Wednesday.
