With the largest donation to "The Dream Continues" Capital Campaign for a multipurpose building including gym and theater space, A Friend of Sophia Academy recently gave $500,000 to Sophia Academy. Exceeding the campaign goal with $2.5 million, the school received this challenge grant to pay down the debt on this building. Pledge payments and rental income on the space over the next several years will continue to reduce the debt.

"With six new sports teams and more beginning this year, we have also increased and enhanced our fine arts program with this space," said Capital Campaign Co-Chair and Founding Director Marie Corrigan. "It is the only space to hold all of our students, staff, parents and grandparents at one time for games, religious services and drama productions as well. Many great memories have been made here."

"We were able to complete the building in record time on a very reasonable budget. The economy changed as we were building, and our campaign stalled.  However, with faith and generosity of many, we stayed the course and made it to the finish line. Two other individuals added challenges as well. In the last year, we challenged our close donors to give or find $5,000 or more to leverage the $500,000 challenge. Many stepped up to this goal and over 70 families or foundations pledged at this level."

The level of opportunities available are rare in a school the size of Sophia Academy, and many students will find their passions and leadership ability through them. In a larger school, there are usually fewer chances to shine in these areas, especially for students beginning in the activity. By offering teams, music and drama programs and encouraging every student to be involved in at least one, we know they have a better chance of making friends, building confidence and making positive choices. Students who are disengaged at an early age are more likely to drop out of school, and the schools have an obligation to make the opportunities available.

Other markers of success due to this project:

  • Won first place in sports tournaments
  • Expanded our fine arts program, increasing events and winning Middle School One Act Awards
  • Accomodated our largest events in this space, the only space that can hold all of our constituents here at one time (Grandparents Day, Awards Ceremonies, Chapel, schools meetings, parent education)
  • Increased the middle school to its largest number; 80% of students are involved in extracurriculars
