It's the issue that's on many people's minds: could the horror that visited Newtown last week happen here? Are our schools safe from such violence? And what can we do - if anything at all - to make them safer?

Metro Atlanta schools rushed to reassure parents that their systems are prepared in the event of an emergency. APS Superintendent Dr. Erroll Davis said city of Atlanta schools have implemented safety drills and other procedures that are designed to protect their students. Nonetheless, he asked parents to always remain vigilant and alert school officials if they see something suspicious.

DeKalb County schools also have a system in place for notifying parents, locking down schools and having law enforcement and school officials on hand to keep the public informed should the unthinkable occur.

On Monday, Sandy Springs police officers visited local schools to maintain a sense of comfort and security.

And coping with tragedy after it happens is crucial. City of Decatur schools had counselors on hand after the Newtown shooting to help their own students deal with its aftermath. And there are several other sources of advice and information on how parents can discuss such tragedies with their kids.

Patch wants to know: are metro Atlanta schools safe from such mindless violence? Do you feel safe sending your child to school in our communities? If not, can anything be done to make them more secure?
