Volleyball celebrates its third consecutive trip to the state semifinals.

The last full week of October saw a light week of competition for fall sports at St. Pius. Volleyball, ranked No. 5 in the ScoreAtlanta AAA poll, advanced to the state semi-finals by taking two matches last week. Football dropped to No. 9 in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution AAA poll after dropping its game. Boys’ and girls’ cross country were off last week preparing for the Region 6-AAA meet this weekend. The boys’ are No. 4 in the ga.milesplit.com all-classification poll, while sitting in the top spot in AAA.  The lady harriers are No. 2 in AAA.

The football team dropped its first region contest since 2010, as Woodward defeated the Golden Lions, 20-14. St. Pius (6-2, 3-1) were led by Ryan Braswell, as the senior fullback rushed for 155 yards on 19 carries, scoring one touchdown. Branden Mitchell added 80 yard and a TD on the ground, as the Golden Lions lost five fumbles on the evening. Dalton Wilson and Davis Price led all defenders with nine tackles apiece. St. Pius will host fellow Region 6-AAA foe, No. 5 Blessed Trinity, Friday night on Senior Night at George B. Maloof Stadium at 7:30pm.

The Golden Lion volleyball team defeated No. 8 Ringgold, 3-0, in the second round of the state tournament last Tuesday. St. Pius (42-17-1) advanced to the state semifinals with a win over No. 3 Sonoraville on Saturday. The Golden Lions will take on No. 2 Woodward at Woodward in the state semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30pm. If the netters advance, they will play on Saturday at Marietta High School for the State Championship for the second consecutive year.

Boys’ and girls’ cross country had the weekend off with both teams preparing for the region meet this Saturday at Nash Farms Battlefield. Both teams boast the Week 9 AAA Runner of the Week from ga.milesplit.com. Calvin Tirrell was selected for the boys’ side, while Katie Glenn was the runner for the lady harriers.

Competition Cheer is back in action this weekend at the region meet at Roswell High School.
