Decatur Police Department

The Decatur Police Department issued a statement Monday morning about its investigation into the April 30 death of Paul Taylor, a bicyclist who was struck and killed by a pickup truck on North Decatur Road.

Patch asked police to comment on an article about DeKalb Solicitor Sherry Boston's decision not to prosecute the driver of the truck. Here's what Deputy Chief Keith Lee said.

After a thorough investigation, the Decatur Police Department's accident investigators did not uncover evidence to establish probable cause that the driver involved committed any traffic violations.

Due to the serious nature of this incident, the Decatur Police Department requested the DeKalb County Police Department's Accident Reconstruction Unit review our investigation.  They also found no evidence to support charges against the driver.

The Decatur Police Department submitted our findings to the DeKalb County Solicitor's Office who concurred.  After consultation with the Solicitor's Office, the Decatur Police accident investigators requested the Solicitor's Office submit the investigative file to the Georgia State Patrol for review.

After reviewing the evidence, the Georgia State Patrol concurred with the initial findings.  Although this was a tragic incident, no evidence has been discovered which would warrant charges being filed against the driver.
