Decatur police have issued a community advisory after being told a man tried to lure a child into a white van on Saturday, June 8. Here is the advisory:
On Saturday, June 8, 2013 at approximately 5:12p.m., the Decatur Police Department was notified of a person in a motor vehicle attempting to make contact with a juvenile near the 300 block of East Ponce De Leon Avenue. The incident had occurred earlier in the day, at approximately 1:30 p.m.
A juvenile male was approached by a white male driving a white van. The person opened the passenger door and motioned with his hand for the juvenile to approach the van. The juvenile immediately left the area and the van proceeded to travel northbound on Commerce Drive. A “Suspicious Person” report was filed by the responding officer.
At this point the City of Decatur Police Department does not have information that would support an arrest; however, Officers and Investigators are actively investigating the incident, including following up with a person of interest whose description matches the one provided both from a prior complaint and on Saturday.
Please take this opportunity to remind young people you know to be aware of their surroundings, to not engage with people they do not know and to have an idea of where they could go if they are away from home and are feeling unsafe or threatened by any person.
If you observe any suspicious activity, please contact the Decatur Police Department at (404) 373-6551; or, in the case of an emergency immediately dial 911.
