DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency officials will host a workshop on how to prepare for severe weather next week.

The meeting will be held at the ONE DeKalb Neighborhood Resource Center in Northlake Mall, 4800 Briarcliff Road, on the lower level of the mall near the Macy’s entrance on Thursday, June 13 at noon.

During the free workshops, officials will discuss tornado safety measures; DeKalb’s early warning system, CodeRED; and the critical lifesaving steps to take the first 72 hours after a weather emergency. The workshops are less than an hour and will include a question and answer session.

“We were all touched by the tragic and devastating tornado in Moore, Okla. When such tragedies occur, we can only think about what we would do if a tornado or severe storm struck our communities,” county CEO Burrell Ellis said in a statement. “I encourage everyone to participate in these workshops to learn what should be done in weather emergencies.”

DeKalb Emergency Management provides countywide emergency management and coordination through prevention, protection and mitigation against natural and manmade disasters.

Tornado season is from March through August and can occur any time of day, but tornadoes are most likely to occur from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Meteorologists add that tornadoes and severe storms can occur any time of year in every state.
