The case of former DeKalb county school board members who take issue with being replaced by Gov. Nathan Deal goes before the Georgia Supreme Court on Monday.
The legal team representing former board chairman Eugene Walker says Deal went over the voters. This past February, Walker wrote in a Patch letter to the editor:
Governor Deal is wrong to thumb his nose at the U.S. and State constitutions, and he knows he is wrong.
Arguments on both sides of the case will last 20 minutes each, WSB radio reports. In all, Deal removed six board members after the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools put the school system on probation. The system could face losing its accreditation.
This past March, Deal appointed new members to take the place of Walker, who was the board chairman; Donna Edler; Pam Speaks; Nancy Jester (who resigned); Sarah Copelin-Wood; and Jesse "Jay" Cunningham. A month later, in April, Speaks, Copelin-Wood, Edler and Cunningham asked to be reinstated.
