Last week the DeKalb Board of Commissioners officially declared much of the county a slum when it unanimously voted to create an urban development commission.
The creation of the commission means that businesses that create jobs will be eligible for tax breaks if they move into the area, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The commissioners designated much of DeKalb south of I-85 as eligible for urban renewal.
County officials are urging residents not to let the "slum" designation offend them, but rather to focus on the possibility of new businesses coming into their community.
Patch wants to know: do you think your unincorporated DeKalb neighborhood is a slum? Do the positives of this new development commission outweigh the negatives? Or is this just the latest misstep for a county government that has experienced more than its share of travails over the past few months?
