DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis will recommend a site for a new county animal shelter to the board of commissioners next week.
Ellis will choose a site based on the recommendations presented by the county’s Internal Animal Services Evaluation Committee. The group met May 24 to evaluate 11 locations.
Ellis will present his recommendation to the board of commissioners at its Committee of the Whole meeting June 4. The sites under consideration include:
- 1655 Church St., Decatur
- 1665 Scott Boulevard, Decatur
- 6184 Memorial Drive, Stone Mountain
- 3430 Kensington Road, Decatur
- 2915 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker
- 5660 Buford Highway, Atlanta
- 4280 Northeast Expressway, Atlanta
- 3461 Reeves St. (PDK Chamblee-Dunwoody), Atlanta
- 3717 Clairmont Road (PDK Clairmont Road), Atlanta
- 6541 Hillvale Road (Covington Highway), Lithonia
- 3071 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker
The committee removed one site from a list of 12 after it was determined the site was not for sale.
“I have reviewed the committee’s recommendations and have requested additional information. I have not made a decision at this time, but I will make my decision based on a process that was inclusive of citizen participation,” Ellis said. “Providing a new shelter is one of my priorities this year. I am committed to making these final steps move as expeditiously as possible.”
Within the last year, Ellis said he has appointed a new director of Animal Services and Enforcement and improved staffing to help with day-to-day operations.
