St. Pius X Catholic High School has been named the 2012-13 AAA Regions Director’s Cup winner for the fourth time in five years. Both the boys’ and girls’ athletic programs swept the individual sport Director’s awards as well. Awarded by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association (GADA), the Cup recognizes the athletic departments in each Georgia High School Association classification that have excelled in the previous school year.
“Everyone associated with St. Pius X is thrilled with the recent announcement that our athletic program was once again named the recipient of the Georgia Athletic Directors Association “Director’s Cup” signifying that we were the best overall program in the state in our classification. This award is significant as it validates the effort put forth by our coaches in maintaining an exemplary program in every sport,” St. Pius X Principal Steve Spellman said.
The award caps off one of the most successful athletic years in school history as the Golden Lions won six state championships and three state runner-up trophies. Boys’ cross country won the AAA state championship for the third consecutive year while girls’ soccer took home its fourth crown in five seasons. Girls’ cross country, girls’ basketball and boys’ track also won state titles. Football, volleyball and boys’ tennis finished as state runners-up. Baseball ended its season in the semi-finals as boys’ basketball and girls’ lacrosse finished as quarterfinalists. Boys’ golf finished in third place at the state championship. In total, every athletic program qualified for the state playoffs this school year.
St. Pius X girls’ soccer Coach Sara Geiger said, “It is such an honor to be able to teach and coach such wonderful athletes. The achievement that they have brought to the school and their peers is so rewarding.”
According to the GADA Web site, the purpose of the Regions Director’s Cup is to recognize those athletic departments in all GHSA classifications who have excelled and shown superior performance. Since the 1999-2000 school year, the GADA has presented this award annually. Award winning schools will receive a Regions Director’s Cup Trophy and a Wall Banner. Beginning with the 2002-2003 school year, the award has been presented to the top male program, top female program, and top overall program in each classification.
