The Lakeside Lady Vikings and Druid Hills Lady Red Devils captured one-goal wins as they surged into the state playoffs on Tuesday.

The Lady Vikings (18-0-1) shutout Cambridge (9-8-0) 2-0 at Hallford Stadium to advance to the Class AAAAA girls’ state playoffs second round.

Lakeside dominated the first half of play by keeping the ball on Cambridge’s half of the field most of the half, but had only one good shot on goal through the first 24 minutes of play.

Cambridge got one good look as well but Lakeside goalie Ashley Graham made an easy save out front at the 16:27 mark of the first half.

The score remained 0-0 until the Lady Vikings put more pressure on the Cambridge defense and Sage Bernard put the ball in the net following an exchange in front of the goal for a 1-0 lead going into the half.

Cambridge came out more aggressive in the second half, but the score remained 1-0 until new DeKalb County assists record holder (39) Brittanie Evans scored her 13th goal of the season with 15:50 left in the game. The goal gave Lakeside a 2-0 lead.

Lakeside continued to put the pressure on in the final 15 minutes with seven shots on goal saved by the Cambridge goalie or just over the goal.

Lakeside advances to host the winner of Allatoona (11-5-1) and Heritage-Conyers (12-4-2) on Tuesday (May 7).

The Vikings (13-4-2) jumped out to a 5-2 lead early in the second half and held off a furious Kell (12-7-0) rally to advance to the second round of the boys’ Class AAAAA state playoffs with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap at Hallford Stadium.

Lakeside got out to a quick 2-0 lead behind goals from Andy Person (assist by Alejandro Gonzalez) and Cheikh Faye (assist by Ted Perry) in front of a crowded goal area on both scores.

Kell answered back on a pair of headers into the goal by Guy Miyake with in a three minute span to knot the game at 2-2 with 17:43 to play in the first half. Miyake’s were a direct result of free kicks off the foot of teammate Michael Isidoro.

The Vikings came right back to take a 3-2 lead into the half scoring just over a minute later as Brad Gavrielides fed Ted Perry for the score.

Kell pressed quickly on offense after the half, but Lakeside goalie Susjed Garcia came up with the save to preserve Lakeside’s one-goal lead just 39 seconds into the half.

Less than a minute later the Vikings took a 4-2 lead ad Dewitt Alemu found George Gavrielides who put the ball into the left corner to expand the lead.

Gavrielides would score the needed insurance goal four minutes later as he
took a pass from Diego Gonzalez and put his shot into the right corner for
a seemingly safe 5-2 lead.

Kell would answer two minutes later to cut the lead to 5-3 and Lakeside
held the two-goal lead for the next 28 minutes of play. The Longhorns made
it a one goal game with four minutes to play as they continued to put
pressure on the Lakeside defense.

The Vikings kept the Kell offense at bay the rest of the way to seal the
victory.

Lakeside plays host to the South Paulding (8-8-0)/Heritage-Conyers
(13-3-2) winner in the second round scheduled for Wednesday (May 8).

The Druid Hills Lady Red Devils (11-5-1) knocked off Westlake 2-1 at
Avondale Stadium to advance to the Class AAAAAA girls’ state playoffs
second round.

Druid Hills will host Tift County (16-2-0) in the second round scheduled
for Tuesday (May 7).

Class AAAAA state playoff entries Dunwoody and Arabia Mountain had their
seasons come to an end on Tuesday.  Dunwoody finished 12-4-1 on the season as Northview (14-2-0) won 2-0 at North DeKalb Stadium.

Arabia Mountain’s first trip to the state playoffs ended in an 8-0
defeat at the hands of Riverwood (15-4-0). The Lady Rams finish the season
at 11-5-0.
