DeKalb County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for a new T-Hanger investment at DeKalb Peachtree Airport, the second busiest in Georgia. The event will take place rain or shine at 2000 Airport Road, Atlanta, at 10 a.m. To commemorate the occasion, the Civil Air Patrol will make its last flight on that runway.
In June 2010, the county's Revenue Enhancement Commission was launched by CEO Burrell Ellis and the board of commissioners as a joint initiative in response to the global economic downturn. Among the commission’s top priorities was the construction of additional private hangars at DeKalb Peachtree Airport. Additional private hangars create the opportunity for additional property tax revenues, additional sales tax revenues and would help the county attract companies for economic development and add to the county’s commercial tax base long-term.
In September 2011, the board of commissioners approved The LPA Group Inc. for the design of the Westside Development Project.
When completed, there will be 53 total hangar units consisting of 39 small single airplane T-hangars units, 10 midsize single airplane T-hangars units and 4 box hangars capable of storing two small airplanes each. The $8.2 million project is expected to generate $500,000 annually.
